So it’s a new year, and you have a shiny new Cineworld unlimited card (or similar) that someone gifted you for Christmas. Here are the movies I think will be the best way of using this splendid gift in the upcoming month, and it’s a great month you guys!. (Side note: Movies are also a great way to banish the January Blues too!)

January 1st

A British drug lord tries to sell off his highly profitable empire to a dynasty of Oklahoma billionaires (From IMDB)

The Trailer Makes this one look equal parts completely bonkers and kinds funny. I believe this will be my first movie of the new year, so am hoping to kick it off with a bang.

A young boy in Hitler’s army finds out his mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their home. – From IMDB

I loved this film so much. I was luck enough so see an advanced screening at my local theatre and I strongly recommend everyone to see it. It is funny and heartwarming and heartbreaking. Check out my review here:

January 10th

Two young British soldiers during the First World War are given an impossible mission: deliver a message deep in enemy territory that will stop 1,600 men, and one of the soldier’s brothers, from walking straight into a deadly trap. – From IMDB

From everything I have heard, this film is a masterpiece. So it is definitely my most anticipated of the month

January 17th

A group of women take on Fox News head Roger Ailes and the toxic atmosphere he presided over at the network. – From IMDB

This will either be a great real life story. Or it will make a mockery of the people involved and handle the subject matter to clumsily, there is no other option. i for one am hoping for the first one. I really want to like this. I am usually a fan of the expose type of movie so this should be right up my alley.

World-renowned civil rights defense attorney Bryan Stevenson works to free a wrongly condemned death row prisoner. – From IMDB

I am pretty sure this is another ‘based on true events’ type thing, a strong theme in January obviously. So based on this it should be a great result for me. The trailer looks great and showcases some great performances, so I have high hopes.

January 24th

THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD re-imagines Charles Dickens’ classic ode to grit and perseverance through the comedic lens of its award-winning filmmakers- giving the Dickensian tale new life for a cosmopolitan age with a diverse ensemble cast of stage and screen actors from across the world.  – From IMDB

I’m not sure that the Synopsis from IMDB really sheds any light on the actual plot of the film, but i am interested to see if any film maker can actually make me enjoy a Dickens Tale, (I am not his biggest Fan.) The trailer looks funny enough, so I guess I will have to wait and see.

January 31st

After a jaded magazine writer (Emmy winner Matthew Rhys) is assigned a profile of Fred Rogers, he overcomes his skepticism, learning about empathy, kindness, and decency from America’s most beloved neighbor. – From IMDB

Anyone who hasn’t already seen this film should do so immediately. I saw it in an advances screening and fell in love. It is so heartwarming and adorable. Tom Hanks gives one of, if not the best performance he has given in years. Go see it.

Slim and Queen’s first date takes an unexpected turn when a policeman pulls them over for a minor traffic violation. When the situation escalates, Slim takes the officer’s gun and shoots him in self-defence. Now labelled cop killers in the media, Slim and Queen feel that they have no choice but to go on the run and evade the law. – From IMDB

This one won’t get the attention it deserves, so I urge everyone to see it if it shows in your theatre. It is a nail biting thriller right to it’s shocking conclusion.
