I was seventy percent sure going into this film, based on all the chatter I had heard about it , that it wasn’t going to be for me.  But I have been proven wrong a few times recently, so I decided to give Uncut Gems a chance to impress me.  There were some great things about it don’t get me wrong, but it just was not my idea of a good time.  I don’t like being stressed and uncomfortable for two hours at a time, Thank You.  Now watch me try and cobble together a quick synopsis.

A charismatic New York City jeweler always on the lookout for the next big score makes a series of high-stakes bets that could lead to the windfall of a lifetime. Howard must perform a precarious high-wire act, balancing business, family, and encroaching adversaries on all sides in his relentless pursuit of the ultimate win. – From IMDB

So just this once I cheated on writing the synopsis, but seriously, the plot for this drove me so nuts that I couldn’t have written a coherent synopsis if I had to.

The plot was the first thing that I had a problem with.  It was engaging and it was a very well paced.  But for me it just ended u chasing it’s own tale.  I was watching this with a friend and we had to keep checking in with each other that we knew what was going on as most of the action ahappens very quickly and chaotically, and with a lot of yelling.  So at times it was hard not to get lost.  It was brilliantly written, but for me, not presented in the best way.  And don’t even get me going on that ending.  All the build up and stress for it to end like that?  I laughed out loud, it seemed so absurd.

Adam Sandler does give a career best performance here.  It is so out of his usual wheelhouse that it is a little jarring, but there is no doubt that his performance as Howie Ratner is worthy of all the hype it is getting.  A complete snub during awards season, his portrayal of this character should have been given more recognition than it was.  But beside him, none of the other characters are really all that memorable to me.  And I don’t know if that was intentional, to keep all the attention focussed on Sandler, but I watched this film 24 hours ago and can’t even remember the name of any of the other characters in the movie.

It wasn’t a complete wash out for me by any means, but I didn’t see the love for it that a lot of people have.
