Considering that the newest Bill and Ted film is being released this year, and I am yet to see either of the previous two films, I thought it was about time to give this a whirl.

Rufus is sent back in time to supply Bill and Ted with a time machine, so they can collect famous historical figures to help them pass their history report.  Without passing history, they will flunk out of school, meaning Ted will be sent to military school, their band ‘The Wyld Stallyns’ will have to be broken up, and that means that their amazing music will never bring peace and unity to the world, the very future Rufus has returned from in order to keep safe.

Now when you think of sci-fi time travel stories this is not the kind of thing that springs to mind.  It’s usually something highly science fiction based with high tech civilisations and a lot of techno babble.  Well, it’s that or Doctor Who.  Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure is not like any of those things.  It is just a silly, funny, over the top kind of comedy, that just so happens to be about Time Travel.  Teen comedies like are usually a lot more high school based and to me at least, have run their time and are boring and repetitive.  This film takes the ingredients we know so well from a thousand high school comedies, and ran with it in a totally new direction.

I am not going to lie, until I watched the new trailer for ‘Bill and Ted Face The Music’ which came out a few weks ago, I had never even seen a clip from any of these films.  And knowing that I was going to be headed to the movies soon to see the latest instalment, I decided it was well past time I gave them a shot, people seemed pretty excited about the release of a third film, and that many people aren’t usually wrong.  I expected to hate this film.  Comedy is not my top genre as you well know by now, but actually to my great surprise, I found this oddly entertaining.  Sure the annoying accents got old pretty soon and the use of ‘Dude’ and ‘Totally’ every third word began to grate after a while, but I found the story engaging and the characters funny and likable.  So I would say for the most part, the film did it’s job.

This is not the kind of role that I am used to seeing Keanu Reeves in, I am used to Keanu Reeves, Action movie superstar.  This was a new and slightly jarring experience for me and I was surprised how well he could play the comedy role, let alone one that is such a departure from what I am used to.  I still prefer it when he is kicking butt, but it’s good to know the guy has this kind of range.

I am sure I don’t need to tell half of you to go watch this film, most of you probably have already, but just in case, this silly, sci fi, comedy is totally worth your time.  And is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video Now!
