If Anything Happens I Love You is a beautifully illustrated animated short film that takes us on an extraordinary emotional journey of two parents struggling to overcome the hurt left by a tragic event that leaves their family changed forever. The film is a stunning tale that juxtaposes the excruciating pain one can feel as well as the resilience of the human spirit. If Anything Happens I Love You is a touching experience for anyone who has ever loved and lost. – From IMDB

For such a short film, just over 12 minutes, they sure to cram a lot of emotion in there.  We watch a couple as they are struggling to come to terms with the death of their young daughter after a school shooting.  There is no dialogue, just a beautiful musical score to portray the tone and to set the scene for what is happening, so the animation has to tell us the whole story.  While the actual figures in the film tell you what is going on at the moment, it is the shadows constantly following you around that portray their feeling.  Saying all the things that can’t say out loud, how they wish they could have stopped her from leaving that day.

The film also makes great use of silence.  There are moments where things happen that are so poignant, so meaningful, that there is nothing that can be done to portray how people feel.  So the film goes completely silent, allowing the audience to assess for themselves how they would feel in a moment like that.

The animations I think are hand drawn, and have a great style to them.  Colour is used sparingly, and usually during a memory or event linked to their missing child, she was the bright spot in their life.  Now she is gone, everything is dull, monochrome.  And it’s another clever way to show emotion without using any words.

It’s an emotional watch, don’t let it’s short run time fool you into thinking otherwise.  Those of an emotional disposition should definitely come armed with tissues.
