Hawkeye (2021) Episode 3 – Echoes: Review

Director: Rhys Thomas

Writers: Elisa Lomnitz Climent, Stan Lee, Don Heck

RATING: 4 Stars

Clint and Kate have to escape the clutches of the Tracksuit mafia, and in doing so are introduced to Maya Lopez, a deaf woman with amazing martial arts skills who has a score to settle the the Ronin. But there is someone more powerful pulling the strings behind the scenes, and after a pretty awesome high speed car chase, when Kate and Clint begin to snoop around, they are rudely interrupted.

So all the exposition and character set up have been dealt with in the first two episodes, and now we are getting down to the god stuff. There is a lot of great action going on in this episode. The hand to hand fight in the warehouse was excellent, with both Clint and Kate showing off their skills, but it was great to see someone who could give Clint a bit of a run for his money in the form of Maya, without her having to have superpowers. This is quickly followed by a really awesome car chase through New York, and culminating on the Brooklyn bridge. This scene was excellently shot, and pretty humorous. And though it has been shown in many of the trailers and previews, there were still plenty of shots from this sequence we hadn’t seen, leaving us with a few surprises.

It wasn’t all go go go though. A few times throughout the episode, we do slow down a bit and focus more on the characters. And these were some really special moments. We are finally getting to learn more about Clint, and his family, and the things he has sacrificed to be an Avenger. Kate and Clint have a few really great moments in this episode as well when they aren’t kicking mafia butt. And their relationship on screen is just so funny and heartwarming, I can’t wait to see it grow further.

I almost feel there was too much action and not enough plot development in this episode, a weird thing to say about a Marvel project I know. The quiet moments were some of my favourite in the episode, and I wish we had more of them. But then maybe they would have lost their impact?

I like that we are slowly building up to a reveal of the big man in charge. I know who I hope it is, and I am pretty sure I am right, but I think I am going to have to wait a week or two to see if my guess is correct, as I am unsure if anything ahs been officially confirmed yet, or if it was all rumours?

Overall a much stronger third episode for me, and I cannot wait to see where the story goes in the second half of the series.
